You're watching the race and suddenly everything stops
The cars slow down, the drivers head back to the pits and a red flag appears on screen.
What happened? What does it mean? What happens next?
🚩 What is a red flag?
A red flag means the immediate interruption of the session. It can happen in free practice, qualifying or the race. When it appears, all drivers must slow down immediately and return to the pit lane safely.
When is a red flag shown?
Race control can show one for several reasons:
A serious accident requiring urgent medical attention on track
Extreme weather conditions that make racing unsafe
Significant debris or spills that represent a real danger
Severe damage to the safety barriers that requires repair
Very poor visibility due to heavy rain, fog or smoke
What happens after a red flag?
It depends on whether it's in qualifying or the race:
In qualifying: the remaining time is frozen. When it resumes, drivers go back out from the pit lane to attempt their fast laps again.
In the race: the cars form up on the grid again. Drivers can make minor repairs and change tyres. Then there's either a standing restart or a rolling start, depending on how many laps are left.
⏱️ Can you change the car under a red flag?
Yes, but with limits. Drivers can change tyres and make minor repairs. They cannot change parts like the chassis or engine unless there has been a serious accident.
A fun fact
The shortest race in F1 history was the 2021 Belgian GP at Spa: only two laps were completed behind the Safety Car before the red flag came out due to extreme rain. Half points were awarded.
