Argentina’s F1 sensation Franco Colapinto is set to make his long-awaited return to the grid as he steps into a full-time race seat with BWT Alpine F1 Team, beginning with the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola.
As part of an ongoing assessment of its driver lineup, the team has decided to rotate one of its race seats for the next five rounds of the 2025 FIA Formula One World Championship. This resulted in Franco Colapinto joining Pierre Gasly from the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, leading to a new evaluation before the British Grand Prix in July.

Colapinto made headlines last year with a surprise F1 debut at Monza, becoming the first Argentinian driver in Formula 1 in over two decades. The 21-year-old quickly made his mark, scoring points in just his second Grand Prix with a stunning eighth-place finish in Baku.
Despite his impressive performances, the 2025 grid was already full by the time Colapinto arrived on the scene. Undeterred, he remained close to the action, joining Alpine F1 Team as a Reserve and Test Driver for the 2025 season. Over the past months, he completed extensive testing in previous-generation machinery, attended the opening rounds of the season in Melbourne and Shanghai as Alpine’s reserve driver, and played a key role in car development through simulator work across the remaining race weekends.

Now, Colapinto's perseverance has paid off. The young Argentine will step into the Alpine F1 Team race seat for the next 5 rounds of the 2025 season, starting with the Emilia Romagna GP on May 16–18. Imola is a fitting stage for the start of Colapinto’s next chapter. The iconic Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari has been the site of key milestones in his career, including his maiden FIA Formula 3 victory in 2022 and his first FIA Formula 2 win in 2024.
Franco Colapinto:
"Firstly, I want to thank the team for giving me the opportunity to drive competitively for the next five races. I will work hard with the team to prepare for the next race in Imola and the upcoming triple-header, which will no doubt be intense and a big challenge for everyone.
"I have stayed sharp, and I am as ready as possible with the team’s race support testing programme, as well as on the simulator at Enstone. I will do my best to get up to speed quickly and give it my all to deliver the best possible results alongside Pierre."
Franco will make his first Formula 1 start of the 2025 season at the opening round of the European triple-header: the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Imola (May 16-18). He will then compete in the Monaco Grand Prix (May 23-25) and the Spanish Grand Prix (May 30-June 1), before heading to North America and Austria for the Canadian and Austrian Grands Prix in June.
